Cookies vs. localStorage - What's the Difference?

A cookie is a small text file a website puts on your device. Your browser sends it back to the server with every request, which is why cookies are the usual tool for tracking and for remembering preferences.

localStorage is a different thing. It is a storage area in your browser that stays entirely on your device, and it is never automatically sent to any server.

That difference matters here, because FormBarn itself sets no cookies at all. Everything the site needs to work sits in localStorage: your document drafts and an anonymous visitor ID, both on your own machine. The only cookies you may run into come from Google Analytics, Google AdSense (when ads are enabled), and Google's consent management. All three are described below.

Types of Cookies & Storage We Use

1. Essential storage (no cookies)

The service needs these to function, and none of them track you:

  • Document drafts: we auto-save your Bill of Sale and Lease Agreement answers to localStorage (keys bof-motor-vehicle and lease) so you can close the tab and pick up where you left off.
  • Anonymous visitor ID: a random UUID (key uuid). We use it with your IP address for one thing only: keeping PDF downloads inside fair-use rate limits.
  • Push subscription (opt-in): turn notifications on and your browser stores a subscription endpoint. It reaches our server only so we can deliver the notifications you asked for.

localStorage entries stay until you clear your browser data, or the site data for this website.

2. Analytics cookies (Google Analytics)

We use Google Analytics to see how visitors use FormBarn: pages visited, time on page, browser and device type, traffic sources, and general location (country/city level). It typically sets _ga and _ga_*.

Until you consent, it runs non-personalized. Google Consent Mode v2 governs it and holds it there by default.

You can opt out on every site with the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

3. Advertising cookies (Google AdSense)

Advertising keeps FormBarn free. When ads are enabled, Google AdSense and its partners may use cookies (such as __gads and __gpi) to serve ads, limit repetition, and measure performance.

These cookies are only present when ads are enabled on the site, and they only become personalized after you consent, where the law requires consent.

You can turn off personalized ads in Google Ads Settings.

How to Manage or Clear Cookies & Storage

Most browsers let you view, block, and delete cookies and site data (including localStorage) in their settings.

Clearing site data for formbarn.com also deletes your saved document drafts. Download anything you still need before you clear it.

You can also opt out through Your Online Choices (EU) and Network Advertising Initiative (US).
