Overview
A snowmobile bill of sale documents a private sled sale: the machine's VIN, the price, and the handover date. Like ATVs, snowmobiles live in the off-highway registration world — decals and trail permits rather than license plates — and several snow-belt states don't title them at all.
Where there's no title, the bill of sale is the buyer's proof of ownership for registration, insurance, and any future resale. That makes getting the VIN and names exactly right the whole point of the document.
What a snowmobile bill of sale needs
VIN on the tunnel
Snowmobile VINs are stamped on the tunnel (usually the right side, near the footrest). Check it against the seller's registration card.
Trail registration transfers
Most snow-belt states require registration and/or trail permits. The buyer re-registers with the bill of sale — often at the DNR or parks department, not the DMV.
Mileage is informational
No federal disclosure applies. Sled odometers/hour meters can be noted voluntarily in the additional terms.
Off-season sales need extra care
Summer sled deals can't be test-ridden. Put the as-is condition, compression numbers, or any warranty promise in writing — it's the only record that survives to winter.
How to write a snowmobile bill of sale
- 1
Enter the sale date and the state where the sale takes place.
- 2
Add the seller's and buyer's full legal names and addresses.
- 3
Describe the snowmobile — make, model, year, and tunnel VIN.

- 5
Both parties sign; the buyer re-registers for trail use.
Snowmobile bill of sale FAQs
Do snowmobiles have titles?
Only in some states. Many snow-belt states are registration-only, which makes the signed bill of sale the buyer's main ownership document.
Does a snowmobile bill of sale need to be notarized?
Almost never for registration-only states; a few titled states require it. Check your state's snowmobile registration rules.
Can I sell a snowmobile as-is in the summer?
Yes — most private sled sales are as-is. Because the buyer often can't test it in season, write the condition and any compression readings into the terms.
Where is a snowmobile's VIN?
Stamped into the tunnel, typically on the right-hand side near the running board. It should match the seller's registration exactly.
Ready to put your snowmobile sale in writing?
The builder pre-fills the right ID field (VIN (frame/tunnel)) for a snowmobile.
